Ford's Better Idea for 84 ?
1984 Ford Tempo, I never thought I could find a Ford I didn't like until this car came along. I drove one of these for my job while in college and truly disliked it. Ford of course had to clone it for the Mercury brand. The Escort had been introduced into the US market as a "World Car" in 1980 and my mother got one in 1981, a red 3 dr TRX model with 4 spd and blacked out trim. Now the Escort did very well in the US market and was eventually replaced by the Focus.
Ford introduced the Tempo/Topaz twins, a few years later, as a mid size alternative. Not much bigger than an Escort, but with more American styling and a slightly larger engine. They lasted into the early 90's and eventually were offered with V-6 power and all wheel drive. But they were not one of Ford's better ideas.
Eventually replaced by the Mondeo based Ford Countor and Mercury Mystique, this car actually sold well when introduced.
