Homophobia and intolerance cause group to boycott Ford

Sometimes it's hard to believe it's the 21st century. Yet another right wing conservative group has put up a website and is warning the non-thinking public of conspiracies in Corporate America, to promote the evil Liberal-Homosexual Agenda by advertising directed at the gay community and a few donations to organizations like GLADD and the Human Rights commission. Why they fear Gays getting married is beyond me, isn't the old moral argument that Gays are too promiscuous? So when they want to commit to a long standing relationship, that's bad too?

I don't know what they're afraid of, and in this day and age, I'm disgusted with this type of Nazi bullshit. But they tried to boycott Disney, Coors and countless others, so why not Ford. Reasonable people always look beyond this type of rhetoric and buy what they want.

A company like Ford that tries to do good in the community should not be boycotted. The ones that should be boycotted are the right wing nuts.

I don't put up this link for you to sign their petition, just so you can see how organized these yahoos are and technically proficient. Don't fall for the bull.

Drive there, race, drive home.

My Mustang at the end of a day of racing at Englishtown. I may not have had many trophies, but good times were had, and the car was so dependable that I would drive down, race and then drive home and averaged 25 mpg on the highway.

Stang and T-Bird in pits

These are both mine, the 91 Mustang and the 78 Thunderbird in the pits, between runs at Englishtown Raceway Park, in Old Bridge New Jersey. Obviously I couldn't drive two cars down, my brother Bob used to race the T-Bird. I Loved that hood scoop :)

Both cars are basically stock, the Mustang even had the silencer cone and ran down the quarter with the stereo blaring. I would have put on the A/C, but didn't want to push it. The T-Bird has a stock 302 with two barrel carb and stock exhaust. We had planned on swapping out the intake for an Edelbrock Performer intake and Holley 650 CFM 4 barrell and intalling a dual exhaust, but with 5 cars at the time, this one was forgotten and eventually went bye bye.

See ya

I just liked this photo

Take time to remember

Remember those who gave all so we could have the freedoms we enjoy. While this is a big party weekend and a time to take advantage of sales, it's really about all of those brave souls that sacraficed for us.

taking today off, Happy Memorial Day weekend, God Bless the USA

OK I'm taking the day off from my blog, and like many of you going to a party, so no new posts today, and doubtfull for the rest of the weekend.

As a follow up to the video hosting test, I was not happy with the quality of the video upon playback from the website. I know the quality of the VHS tape is good and when I transfer the footage to my computer it seems fine, not much degradation of picture quality. But it must be the compresion when it's downloaded, because everything looks washed out and too bright.

It was a learning experience, like much of this blog is. My goals with this blog are to learn how to do more with my computer and improve my typing skills, while doing all of this for free. That means finding a site to host the blog for free (thank you Blogger/Google) and a service to upload and host the pictures (Picasa/Hello) and to host video if needed (FreeVideoBlog.com.)

I've also found resources for assistance with math (math.com) and translation of foreign language websites(AltaVista/Babelfish.) So I'm reaching my goals without any investment of cash and having a lot of fun learning more about Ford and it's partners.

An unexpected bonus was the responses (mostly posative) of people who stumbled onto my blog and the itneraction with other bloggers who have been very kind and helpful.

If anyone who reads this thinks they want to, but don't know how, think again. If a 40 year old Boiler Operator with no background in computers and little experience with the Internet can do it, so can you.

Everyone have a safe and happy holiday weekend and remember out Military personell past present and future that make this all possible. Also take some time to remember our Fire and Police officers here at home. May God bless America and keep us all safe and sound.

Jalopnik discusses Ford's plan to export GT to Europe

Jalopnik gets the scoop on Ford's plan to import Ford GT supercars to Europe.

Is Ford getting back into the game?

Is Ford getting back into the game of building serious cars? The Ford 427 concept and Lincoln Continental Concpet could be compettion for Chrysler 300/Charger twins. Found link to AutoSpies on AutoBlog. I don't know about the V-10, but maybe a supercharged 5.4 V-8
I hadn't realized that the Continental and 427 were so close in architecture, but I want the Lincoln with suicide doors and later a drop top version would be nice.

Lincoln Continental Concept from a few years ago. Maybe this and the 427 will get a green light and Ford will have serious competition for Chrysler's 300/Charger/Magnum and Cadilac's new rear drives.

The suicide doors would be cool, but I don't know about the trunk. Let's hope that Ford takes the chance and produces these.

Ford rotary study in early 70's

I received an interesting e-mail response from Ford to my inquiry about the Wankel powered Mustang. The gentleman from Ford Motor Company had no information on the earlier Mustang prototype built by Curtis Wright, but said that in1972 Ford studied the idea of putting a rotary engine in the Mustang for the 1975 model. That would have been the Mustang II.

He said that they studdied, but decided against it because it was too expensive and performance was no better than the V-6. Also interesting is that he mentioned that they were studying this to compete with a planned rotary powered Vega from Chevy.

Now, they performed studies, but never built a prototype, so there is no Unicorn or Holy Grail to search for here, just a little sliver of Ford history.

Land Rover and Range Rover, the UK's answer to Jeep

Introduced in 1948 Land Rover was the UK's answer to the Jeep and with it's aluminum body being rust resistant and easily fixed. This light weight off roader became a staple of third world countries and severe service industries. Click the link to see more and learn about Land Rover Hover craft, military and industrial applications.

The Land Rover was a very flexible platform with suburban style wagons, small jeep like vehicles and pickups sharing a tough chassis.

Used by Military and Police forces around the world. Even the US Marines use Land Rovers for special duties.

Evolution was slow for Land Rover. But they were internationally recognized as a reliable versitle vehicle.

in the 70's Land Rover got a sibling Range Rover, a more civilized vehicle. Even the queen drove one.

a crew cab Defender 110 pickup

Range Rover updated for 90's

Defender 90, no longer available here in the US this was the short wheelbase Land Rover, as opposed to the 110. Styling much like the original 1948 model 80 that started it all.

The first model Discovery, was priced well to compete and very tough. This one really helped Range Rover stay afloat.

Freelander mini SUV, not doing too well right now. They can't get the gas engines for the current model, because they were built by Rover group and they went belly up. So they're still building Diesel models, but if you want a gas engine you have to wait for the next gen powered by a Ford engine.

The latest version of the Range Rover, now with Jaguar V-8

Ford powered Crosslander, having troubles getting here.

Where is it now?

Wankel Mustang in 1991, anyone know where it is now?

Why would anyone do this to a perfectly good Mustang?

For the boy that can't make up his mind, Mustang or Bronco.

Video test

OK, so it's a poor quality video, but I'm working on it. Click the link above to see short clip that I talked about below. Be patient, it's a learning experience for me.

Video hosting, maybe

OK, I found a site that hosts video clips for free so I may be able to post the video I mentioned in an earlier post showing my 91 Mustang at Englishtown Raceway park. I guess I should also get off my lazy but and hook up my flatbed scanner so I can post some pictures of my cars. This green Mustang is not the right shade, but it is essentially the same car I had. A 5.0 notchback from 91. Actually this picture looks like a 92 or 93, because the rub strip down the side is body colored and my 91 still had the black rubber. This was an awsome car and I was very upset when I had to part with it. Note to self, don't loose job and have to sell Mustang, sell the dog first and then if need be sell blood, but don't sell the Mustang.

Anyway, the link above is for Freevideoblog.com and if I was more patient I could wait for Google's new service offering free video hosting and more http://upload.video.google.com/video_faq.html I'll probably transfer to that service when it's up and running, since Google owns Blogger and that's where my page is. One of the best things about this blog has been how it's forced me to learn more about my computer and what I can do with it. No more surfing for porn, but really using this machine to be productive. The nuns would be so proud :)

Ford and Home Depot to share promotion

In an effort to boost truck sales, Ford is running a promotion with Home Depot.Too late for my home improvement project, but if you are in the market for a new truck and have some projects around the house, it could work out. Similar to their promotin with Dell and the Focus.

The most famous Volvo driver, Simon Templar aka The Saint. Roger Moore who later took over for Sean Connery as 007 James Bond drove a Volvo P1800 in the classic spy series.

NextGenAuto seeks response to Scion, here's what Ford could do

Ford EcoSport mini SUV

On his page, NextGenAuto comments on what some automakers can do in response to Scion and address the Youth/Entry market better. He focuses on Nissan and Honda, but as you know I am concerned with Ford. I think Ford could do two things here, counter Scion and the possible flood of new cars for overseas and save Mercury at the same time. Ford makes some great cars for overseas markets including this Ford EcoSport from the Latin American market and the Ka and Fiesta in Europe. I also like the Courier/Bantam mini ute, but for my point these three cars will do. Mercury could benefit from new unique models and with their new image of youth in their marketing, this could be a good prospect. I'm not saying they should reintroduce the Merkur name for imported Fords, just badge them Mercury and don't hype the import thing at all.

Ford Fiesta ST

European Ford Ka, a prospect for the youth/entry market?

A video stroll down memory lane

I was going through my home office today and found a bunch of VHS tapes that were unmarked. So, I brought them over to the VCR and started to play them one at a time. I was taken by surprise by one of them, a tape I had forgotten about. Several years ago, not long after I got my 1991 Mustang LX 5.0 notchback, one of my best friends and I took our stangs to Englishtown Raceway Park to make a couple of runs. I had forgotten about the tape, which has some very good footage of me and my buddy Joe Z lined up and facing off in our 5.0 Mustangs. His was an 86 Red GT convertilble and mine was a 91 Deep Emerald Green notchback. Both stock running pump gas. Neither was a record setter, but both were reliable fast cars that we drove down and back.

I had never run the quarter mile before and from all the wheelspin and poor ET's it's obvious. But the other thing that's obvious now all these years later, is how much fun we had then and how fortunate I am to have such good friends. Gene F was the guy behind the lens and had a very steady hand while filming. I have to make a copy of this tape for Joe Z before we go to Carlisle. And if I can figure out a way, I'd love to upload a short portion of this onto the web and link to it here. That would be very cool.

If anyone knows, how I could do that, please email me at myforddreams@aol.com

Thanks to Jim and Evan of Muscle Mustangs for responding

I was pleased that out of all the magazines I contacted with questions at least one magazine responded to my inquiry. Evan Smith and Jim Campisano of Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords both took time out of their busy day to respond to my questions about the mystery Wankel Powered Mustang.

I had also contacted AutoWeek and Car and Driver, but no response at all.

I have to say also that Ford did respond as well as several Bloggers, so I am impressed that anyone would take the time to respond at all. After all, who I am but some crackpot seeking answers to questions nobody cares about.

So thanks to Bob Hendricks for finding the article and to Bob at CarsCarsCars, and the Auto Prophet and Evan and Jim of MMFF for taking the time. If there is ever anyway I can return the favor, just let me know.

Summary of Wankel powered Mustang story

To summarize the story from Mustang Ilustrated Feb 1991; Curtiss Wright Aircraft was actually the company that built this Mustang prototype in hopes of garnering interest from the "Big Three" in their new Wankel Rotary twin rotor engines. Curtiss Wright was lagging in the Aircraft business and wanted to diversify so in the early 60's they bought the US patent rights to the Wankel Rotary Internal Combustion Engine from the German automaker NSU, which up until that time was the only company using rotary engines in passenger cars, predating Mazda.

In 1965 bought a Poppy Red Mustang 2+2 (fastback VIN# 5R09C193052) with a 289 V-8 and Cruise-O-Matic from Dockery Ford in Morristown New Jersey. They brought it to their facility in Woodbridge New Jersey and performed the engine swap. The Wankel had 185 hp compared to the 289's 200 hp, but it had a weight advantage of 110 lbs. It was necessary to install a special transmision adapter to mate the drivetrain also. But according to the article the Wankel performed well, tests by an Engineer in the 60's show 0-30 and 0-80 times of 2.8 and 18.4 for the V-8 and 2.9 and 20.0 for the Wankel.

Curtiss Wright failed to convince the big three and the car, with similar prototypes from other makes was sold in the mid 80's to John Deere when they bought the company's assets. The prototypes were sold as a group to a company called Mazda Seventeen of NJ who sold them individually to private collectors. The first private owner was Derek Brown of Hanover PA who held onto the car for a short period before selling it to retired oil man Ray Harris of Shawnee Oklahoma. Ray an avid car collector new this stang was special and was nice enough to let Mustang Ilustrated drive the car for the article in their February 1991 issue.

OK, so now I know that Ford didn't actually build the car, that may explain why they couldn't give me any information on it. But a unique car like this should be in their museum.

So where is this car now? It's 14 years since this article, now that we know the car existed, can anyone find out where it is?

SVO , So Very Outrageous

This awsome SVO Mustang featured in Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords is done the right way.

What do you know, it really is a community online

I am pleased to say that I've learned yet another lesson about the internet. Even though a great deal of it is anonymous and false, there are some genuine people out there who are actually interesting and helpful. I won't say who, but several people that I have linked to on the sidebar have responded to my request for information on the elusive rotary powered Mustang.

I'm very grateful for thier assistance and on to seveal leads that I need to check out.

I'm also glad to say, that some of the magazines that I subscribe to and linked to at the side, have responded also. But none of them have been able to supply leads or suggestions. Maybe when I get this information I will email it to them.

Ford Motor Company also responded to my email and suggested that I contact the Henry Ford Museum and the Benson Research people. So like Ahab, I'm off in search of my white whale, the rotary Mustang. OK, I know it's red, but humor me.

If for no other reason than to prove I'm not insane, I need to find something about this one off car and when I do I will post anything and everything I can here for anyone else that gets the bug.

You learn something new everyday

While we wait for the elusive rotary powered Mustang, let's take a look at what a rotary is and who invented it;

This is a Wankel rotary internal combusiton engine invented by Felix Wankel.
First used in a mass produced automobile by German automaker NSU, which was bought by Volkswagen. And later improved and used extensively by Mazda. I am onto some fresh leads provided by members of the Auto Blogsphere about the elusive Mustang rotary prototype and hope to have something before I go to Carlisle next week.

check out this post on a forum and see that I'm not insane; http://techrepublic.com.com/5208-6230-0.html?forumID=9&threadID=169792&messageID=1730709

Maybe a little obsessed, but not insane.

Can anyone help me with info?

This isn't the one, but I was wondering if anyone has any information on an experimental Mustang from the 60's a red fastback like this one that was fitted with a Wankel rotory engine? I've seen it in magazines and on TV over the years so I know that it didn't get crushed like so many concept vehicles. If you know anything about this car, please email me at myforddreams@aol.com thanks,

Carlisle in two weeks, can't wait

http://www.carsatcarlisle.com/schedule/ford/index.asp

In two weeks, I'm off to Carlisle Fairgrounds for the Carlisle All-Ford Nationals.

Mustang I

Mustang 1 concept from 1962, mid engine rear wheel drive 2 seater powered by the Consul/Taunus V-4

Ford V-4

Ford V-4, developed in the early 60's for use in the UK Consul and Corsair and the German Taunus. This engine was later used by Saab in the 95 & 96 models, replacing their own 2 stroke 2 cylinder engine. http://www.motorbase.com/engine/by-id/1132505961/

In the hubris of my youth I thought that I knew it all and when an older guy who was a Saab fanatic told me that he had a Sonnet powered by a Ford V-4. I immediately looked at him as if he had two heads and said "Ford never made a V-4!" This was about 20 years ago. Steve, where ever you are, I'm sorry. Ford did indeed make a V-4 and some of them found their way to the US over the years, not just in Saabs. I found this out a few years ago, and was just googling around and found these links.

So even though Saab is now owned by General Motors, they owe a great deal of their success to Ford and that mysterious V-4. I know it may seem uninteresting to some that consider themselves hardcore Ford Fanatics, but to really understand Ford you have to know about all of the company.

Do you realize that the first Mustang Prototype, was a mid engined two seater powered by this same V-4? So for all of the Hardcore Ford and Mustang Fans, keep an open mind, because it all ties together.

Mercury, what does the future hold for Mercury

What does the future hold for Mercury? This picture is the Mercury Messenger, a concept based off the new 05 Mustang chassis. I guess Ford was seeing about another Mustang clone for Mercury. Why not, that's all Mercurys are, pimped out Fords.

Do any of you remember when Mercury had distinctive models, not just rebadged Fords?
At one time, Mercury had their own distinct motors and models and if they were using a Ford chassis, they would modify it to suit their car. Now I know that "Platform sharing" is important in today's market to keep costs down, but Mercury has lost it's soul.

I've said before, that Mercury should have one or two distinct models from Ford. The Mercury Capri roadster from the 90's and the Mercury Cougar are two examples that with more support and development could have done more to get traffic into Lincoln-Mercury dealers.

Recent news on the blogsphere about GM's waking to reality and their new plan to focus their brands and combine dealer networks, has got me thinking again. While I acknowledge Mercury will always need some Ford clones, they still need something unique and this Messenger is not it.

Mercury could be Ford's answer to Scion and Honda and Saturn, but selling some unique small vehicles aimed at the youth market. click the link above and see how boring Mercury is now. Look at the archive of my blog and see some of what Ford could import here to change that.

New additions to links and roll call request

I have a couple of new additions to the links on the side, most notably NextGenAuto, Ride and CarPundit. One of the greatest things about this blog is how it has caused me to search for new resources for information and that includes other blogs. www.ride.org

Some of these people have been nice enough to link to my blog and I have added them in return to my link list. I've discovered that there is a growing community of Auto related blogs out there and I'm happy to be able to contribute in my own way. I do have a seperate link page; www.forddreamlinks.blogspot.com that lists any site I've borrowed photos from or found interesting. I also have a blog for Non-Ford cars that I find interesting; www.carsaroundtheworld.blogspot.com if you want to check that out. I am also thinking of a non-automotive blog for social and political issues, but haven't firmed up that decision.

One other thing, I would like to do is to ask anyone who reads my blog and has a Ford, or related vehicle to please email me at myforddreams@aol.com and send a picture of your vehicle and I will post it here. I would also hope that any members of our Military services would do the same or if they have requests to see something special that is Ford related, just let me know.

If it's Ford or Ford powered, let's see it. If you know of a Ford (or related) vehicle that I've missed, let me know and I will see if I can find a picture and link related to it. I haven't gotten to Premiere Auto Group members, but will in the future, so Volvo, Jaguar, Aston Martin, Range Rover and Mazda people be patient.

In two weeks I'm headed to Carlisle PA for the all Ford car show and bringing a digital camera. I hope to post lots of pictures here of some of the unique and special Fords I see.

I get about 30-40 hits a day and hope that will grow a little. I will always try to respond to any comments or emails as quickly as possible and appreciate any feedback. If you comment as Anonymous, please leave your initials or first name.

Thanks,
Joe aka BigFordFan

Ford responds, sort of

I finally got a response from Ford to one of my many emails.

They sent me an email asking what my inquiry was and I asked them why they don't sell the Australian Falcon or Mexican EcoSport here in the US. They responded that they were unaware of any plans to sell these models in the US as they had been designed for their respective local markets. They also mentioned that they prefer that only approved sites link to www.ford.com , sites that they can be sure of the content

I guess that makes sense for a company to say that about linking to their site, but I don't plan on removing the link, because it's a major source of information that relates to many of my posts. They didn't expressly ask me not to link, so click the link to see what's new at Ford around the world.

Below are some F-L-M concepts that didn't make it.

Will Volvo bring Vignale to US as C-70 ?

Is this the new Volvo S-40 Convertible? I read a quick blurb saying that Volvo would bring a retractable top convertible S-40 over in 2006 =07 and I know it has to be this, the Ford Focus Vignale from Europe. Let's see if I'm right.

So what's "new" about it?

When I posted this picture the other day, I thought that grill looked familiar. At first I just put it off to a familal relationship to the new F-150, but then I looked at some of the other Ranger pictures I have on my computer and realized this grill isn't even new. It's a piece that Ford has used on overseas market Rangers for the last few years. Christ have they gotten lazy, not even a new grill, just something they had in the parts bin.

This one just pissed me off. The Ranger which was the BEST SELLING COMPACT PICKUP FOR !^ YEARS, doesn't even warrant a propper refresh. I can't understand this. I read yesterday on BBC's TopGear website, that when the Ranger was introduced into the UK market in 99 it dominated the small pickup market. Fully 1/3 of all pickups sold in the UK are Rangers.

When I went to Ireland a while back, I only saw a few pickups, but almost all of them were Rangers. I saw one Mitsu and two Toyota and a dozen Rangers in a week traveling from Limmerick to Waterford, then Dublin to Kilearny and back to Limmerick.

Ford bring us the crew cab and the 2.5L diesel, PLEASE!!!!

Look behind the brush guard, can you see the "new" grill?

This is the european Ranger. See the new grill? Ford isn't even trying anymore. This is something that's been used overseas for a couple of years.

Econoline or Transit, what should the future bring?

Ford Econoline E-350. I've never been a real fan of vans. I prefer pickups, but Vans are every contractor's required vehicle. Since Dodge dropped the Ram Van series a few years ago and brought over the Sprinter (see below) and GM gave their full size van a makeover a few years ago, the Econoline is looking a little aged. I wonder would it be to Ford's advantage to bring their Transit series of commercial vans to the US? With their diesel engines and newer design, wouldn't one of the most popular commercial vehicles in the world fit in here? I'm not sure if it should replace the Econoline or be sold along side, but I'm seeing a lot of new Sprinters here in suburban NY. Con Edison uses them and Verizon and others won't be far behind. Just a thought, let me know what you think.

This is the Dodge/Freightliner Sprinter based on European Mercedes van. With a diesel eninge and available with any combination of body, wheelbase and payload, I'm seeing more of these on the road in New York.

If fuel prices rise, could these sturdy Ford Transits with their thrifty diesel engines be seen here in the US?

Ford's Transit van, comes in varying wheelbase and payload capacities with cab chassis available.

The Auto Prophet drives an 05 GT and tells us about it.

The Auto Prophet drives an 05 Mustang GT and gives his review. He drove it, he liked it ! I'm jealous, I haven't taken one for a spin yet. I don't want to harass the dealers until I'm ready to walk in and buy. Maybe I can rent one over the summer.

Will it sell in Shang Hai and Amsterdam? Mustang may go global

Mustang may go global. In this article they say if the domestic market "softens" Ford may consider exporting the Mustang to overseas markets. By the way, this color is my second choice for when I get mine. My last Mustang was Deep Emerald Green, and that would be my first choice. I just don't love the Legend Lime.

Demand for the Mustang is high right now, but after the novelty wears and sales settle to normal levels, Ford may export the Mustang to overseas markets. Be patient my friends from over the pond, I still can't get mine, you'll get yours soon enough.

Why I love my Ranger and Ford should not let it die

Compact trucks VS Midsize trucks, in the light of rising gas prices. This is my 99 Ford Ranger, when I bought this I looked at many trucks including non-Ford trucks. I bought this for several reasons, I needed 4 wheel drive and wanted something that could haul anything I wanted. Many people asked why didn't I get a full size truck. Well there were several reasons, gas milage, parking, ease of getting around and price. When I bought this it was not my primary mode of transportation, I also had a 92 Ford Crown Victoria, but I knew that one day this could become my main mode of transportation. Today this is the only vehicle I own, having sold the fleet (92 Crown Vic, 93 SHO Taurus) and I'm quite happy with it.

I have had full size trucks in the past and have had ocassion to drive the newest F-150. While I don't have any problems with them, I don't see them as being practicle for anyone who doesn't have a real need. Back in 99 I could have afforded to buy an F-150 and gave it serious consideration, but the Ranger can haul everything I need, and gets marginally better fuel economy (15 city 20 highway 13 if I beat the piss out of it) On the rare ocassion that I venture into New York City for a show or other ocassion I can find parking at a reasonalbe rate or sometimes on the street. U-turns are not a big deal even on our narrow suburban street and highway ride is very good. My honey and I have done home renovations over the last few years and the Ranger has served us well with trips to the dump and Home Depot. I've helped people move or just picked up large items for our home or friends. I've never met a job that the Ranger can't handle (maybe it's been too much for me, but not the truck) I did add a bed extender cage to my truck for loads longer than 6 feet, but have had no problem with 4x8 sheets of lumber or drywall. For most people a truck the size of the Ranger just makes more sense. My older brother has an F-250 with the powerstroke diesel, but he plows. The Ranger just makes sense.

When Ford came out with the Ranger in the early 80's I was not impressed, the styling was fine, but it was underpowered and too small. Now my Ranger's 4.0 V-6 at 170 hp would be considered underpowered by the automotive press, hell even I've griped about other trucks offering more power, but the reality is my Ranger has seen tripple digit speeds on long trips and has been used to pull small trees off of the driveway at work. I don't panic getting on highway entrance ramps and have never felt any weakness from my truck. Mind you I don't race it, but who does?

The Ranger was the King of small trucks, then every other truck makers started to pump them up and stretch them. Now the line between "midsize"(remember whent they were Compacts?) trucks and fullsize trucks has become blurred. The Dodge Dakota and Ram both come with V-8's the Japanes trucks are larger and everyone but Ford offers a crew cab. Ford has let the Ranger suffer, not wanting to invest money in a losing proposition. I am sick of the thought that the Ranger may be heaped on the scrap pile.

What Ford should do is bring over the 2.5 L Diesle engine they offer in the Ranger overseas and offer the Crew Cab. That could be enough to bring back sales until a new platform can be designed and the Ranger can regain it's crown. A little more power from the new 4.0 SOHC V-6 wouldn't hurt either.

Forbes magazine columnist has a lot to say about Ford, not much I haven't said already

Is Ford going to base the next Lincoln Town Car on this? That would mean losing Limo sales. While I like the FiveHundred, it is not suitable for Lincoln's flagship, even with the V-8 from the Volvo XC-90

Is this Lincoln enough?

Maybe this should be the new Lincoln Town Car?

Could this car boost Ford's sales enough? Is Ford relying too heavily on platform sharing?

The Taurus once led the mid size market and now being replaced by two models (three if you include the wagon/ Freestyle) Ford will be lucky if the combined sales of the new models (FiveHundred and Fusion) could match the peak sales of Taurus.

Edmund's Inside Line, undisguised picture of 2006 Ranger and will Ford let the small truck market go completely?

This is the new 2006 Ranger, basically just a few fresh trim pieces. According to Edmund's Inside Line, Ford seems to be giving up on the small truck market. That's a crying shame, Ford once dominated small trucks and with the line between Mid-Size and Full Size being blurred and rising fuel prices, the Ranger could have reclaimed this market. Come on Ford, why let this name become poison, put a little development money into it. In the mean time, bring us the 2.5 diesel and the crew cab. Please Ford don't let the Ranger go the way of the Taurus.

Molested Cars

"Molested" Mustang, click the link to see more

This guys site, is a goof, he solicits people to send in pictures of cars they think are absurd or tacky. Like this poor schmuck's Mustang. It's not Ford specific, thank God, but it is amusing.

Lincoln Mark X

Lincoln Mark X concept. I know it's just a rebodied Thunderbird, but I like it. The grille is slightly reminiscent of the mid 60's Continental. Maybe they should bring out a 4 door convertible like the new ASC Helios based on the Chrysler 300?

Motor Alley, new blog I'm going to keep an eye on

I stumbled on this one today, found a link at AutoProphet and read a couple of his posts. Seems interesting will add to my list of blogs that I check daily. Unlike AutoProphet, this guys not an Engineer, but he has worked in the Auto Industry in Marketing. He doesn't specialize in Ford, but worth checking anyway.

Ford EcoSport, the UK Fusion's Latin brother with optional 4x4

EcoSport playing in the dirt. While I wouldn't consider it a real off road player, it is designed for the chalenging roads of Latin America and has optional 4 wheel drive. This mini SUV based on proven Fiesta mechanicals has been sold south of the border for the last 2 model years. Maybe it's time to bring it to the US?

People Movers from Ford of Europe

Ford Focus CMax MPV, nicely styled for what it is. I found the following pics at www.autoexpress.co.uk

Ford Focus CMax MPV, not quite a mini van, but more than a station wagon. Based on the Euro Focus platform.

I don't know if this would be a hot seller in the US market, but looking at it, I think it should be considered for people with disabilities requiring wheelchairs. It's low load floor and high roof line make it perfect for that application. The Tourneo van from Europe.

A little odd looking, but Ford of Europe sells this people mover called the Tourneo.

Support your favorite team!

Buy American, this is what my hard earned money will be buying within the next year.

You know, I'm always amazed when people get up in arms about their favorite sports team. They show a fanatacism that is overwhelming. There have been instances of Fans preventing thier team's franchise from pulling out and relocating to another city. There have been rally crys in New York City over the last few months to build a new stadium for the Jets. I'm impressed.

In the automotive world there have been limited examples of the same fervor. I remember in the late 80's when Ford nearly replaced the Mustang with the Ford Probe, built off the Mazda platform. Mustang lovers sent letters and started to buy Mustangs. That response and resurgance in sales helped save the Mustang.

Can't we do something like that again? Our big three auto manufacturers are a very important part of our economy, as Americans can't we do something to save them. I'm not suggesting legislation or tarrifs, they haven't been enough in the past. I'm talking about some "grass roots" action here.

I work in a union job and I drive a Ford truck. Many of my coworkers would talk big about being proud of being Union and being patriotic Americans. These same guys would go out to the lot and get in their foreign car or truck. Some of the staunchest "Union" men I knew drove Nissans, Hyundais and Hondas. Isn't something wrong with this picture? The facts are undisputable, the American big three have improved build quality and increased content level in their cars over the years so much that they are the equal of most foreign cars. Hell, the fact is that the lines are getting blurred with all of the partnerships and joint ventures over the years about what exactly is an "American" car, what with Toyota, Nissan, Honda, VW, BMW and Isuzu having plants in the US.

But my point is still valid, if you want to be patriotic, BUY AMERICAN! If you want to be a good UNION man, BUY AMERICAN! If you want this country to be a viable member of the world economy, BUY AMERICAN!!

If the big three crumble, it's going to be bad for all of us, not just he "lazy" UAW workers.
We can argue about "legacy costs" per unit, pensions and all of the other bullshit, but in the end if the "American Car makers" go under, so do a good many other related companies that make the parts and materials.

I BUY AMERICAN, so don't blame me when the lights go out.

Give me a Ford, or let me walk

This is why I won't ever buy a foreign car, I love Fords, all Fords, and I want to see Ford and our country prosper. For all of the people who say the foreign car quality is better, wake up. To those who say the UAW workers are lazy, screw you. Sorry about the poor paraphrase above, but that's how I feel these days. My honey wanted a new car last year and we talked about what to get. Sweetheart said we should get a Honda, and I said no. If my money was being spent it would only be on an American car. Preferably a Ford. So my counter offer was a Focus, I even went out and found a cool black SVT Focus 5 door. But Sweetie doesn't like the look of the hatchback Focus, so while we were thinking about this, it got put on the back burner. Then last year in April I went to Nashville with my best friend Joe, I fell in love with the new Mustang and that's what I'm buying. Now I don't know what my honey will get , but I would hope it will be American.

Does Ford get it's bang for the buck out of NASCAR ?

Motorcraft Team Taurus

Ford Motor Company spends about $100 million a year on it's sponsorship in NASCAR. At one point in time that would have made sense, but does it now? I remember when I was a kid, I loved watching NASCAR racing, the roar of the cars as they went around the high banked ovals, the ocassional crash, always keeping an eye on the Fords to see if they were ahead of the Chevys, Dodges and others. Back then "Stock Car" racing was just that, well not really stock, but the cars racing held a close relationship with the cars you could buy at your local dealership.

Have you ever heard the old saying "race on Sunday, sell on Monday"? that refers to the fact that many people who became loyal fans of the racers also became fans of what they drove.
The cars in the early days of NASCAR were street cars modifed for racing. Today, they bear no kinship with the "Street" version. Take a look at these pictures.

With the financial situation in Dearborn, isn't it time that Ford dropped their wasteful spending on NASCAR? I'm not saying pull out of racing all together, just NASCAE, let Viagra and M&M's spend their money, they get far more out of it. When was the last time you heard someone say "I wasnt a Taurus like the one that won on Sunday!"

Ford spends big money on SCCA, Grand Am , World Rally Championship and Australian Super Car series racing and that makes sense. They also spend money on NHRA and other forms of racing. Fine, with those forms of racing you can recognize the racers as Ford.

Real stock car racing

Real stock cars, early 50's Ford racer

Back when they were real cars

Back in the days when Stock Cars raced on the beach at Daytona. Back then they were mostly convertibles, with a roll bar visible behind the factory bench seat. The early days of NASCAR

Back when Stock Car racing was really Stock. See the door handles? Although heavily modified for racing, these were based on production bodies and chassis with motors based on production units, although heavily modified as well. This was the golden age of NASCAR

At least looking at this car you can see a resemblance to a Ford T-Bird. This is the last car Ford should have built for NASCAR. The money they spend (over $100 milion a year) could be spent better.

If it didn't say Taurus in large letters on the front you wouldn't know.

Current Ford Taurus NASCAR racer. What does this have to do with Stock Car Racing? There is no relationship between this car and the Taurus you can buy at your local dealer.

Crosslander, with Ford 4.0 V-6

Crosslander 4x4, built in Romania for years, this was at one time imported into the US as the ARO 24 and now a new owner is trying to bring them back as the Crosslander. Click the link above to see their very limited website (one page) This rugged 4x4 will use the Ford 4.0 V-6 out of the Ranger.

some background info on Crosslander

Crosslander 4x4, will have Ford powerplant if imported into the US

Since Crosslander's website isn't much I have linked to AutoIndex.org above, where they have some background info on Crosslander and ARO.

rear view of Crosslander

I remember when ARO was importing these into the US a few years ago. I saw a couple on the road and they reminded me of old Land Rover Defender 110 models. If they ever get off the ground, they should be very competatively priced. Maybe not for your average soccer mom, because of it's military like styling nad ladder frame construction, they may not steal sales from Lexus, but it could be a low priced tough truck for working and off roading. I'll have to check one out very closely if they ever get their dealer network going.

One advantage of living in Westchester county NY, is that you see almost any car built, because of the afluent areas and proximity to NYC.

The Auto Prophet spies 2006 Mach 1, but no camera

The Auto Prophet caught sight of a preproduction 2006 Ford Mustang Mach 1 on his way to work. Too bad he didn't have a camera.
The Auto Prophet works for an Auto Manufacturer in Michigan and has a very informative blog which you can see by clicking the link above.

I'm going to check the Mustang Source and see if Brad Barnett has anything on this, you can see for yourself here; www.themustangsource.com Brad has had info on the new Mustangs before almost anyone else and somehow manages to get pics and specs early.

Both sites are worth checking on a regular basis if you love cars.

Ford and Chevy duke it out down under

Ford Falcon, Ford's big dog down under

Holden Comadore SS, Chevy's big dog down under

Is anyone listening?

I found a story on The Auto Prophet's blog and the link above, about the auto industry reveiwing blogs and forums to take the pulse of enthusiasts. Well I would hope they stumble on my humble little blog, at least Ford.

I started this blog for several reasons;

1 to learn more about computers, I've never really been too proficient (have trouble with Excell.)

2 to express my opinion about Ford cars past present and future and show what Ford offers around the world, but not here in the US.

3 to have fun and maybe communicate with other like minded folks.

I have been very fortunate, I've been having fun and I learned so much about what I can do with my computer and about Ford. I am not an expert, just a regular Joe who knows what he'd like to see come into Ford showrooms. I had emailed Ford several times, but it's not easy.
If you go to Ford's website, rather than an e-mail link, they have the "Ask Kate" section. I've asked Kate several questions over the years and nobody from Ford has ever given even the slightest hint that they received the note.

Maybe one day, someone at Ford will read my blog, maybe not, but I'm going to keep on going as long as it's fun.

I found this link on AutoProphet's blog it's a Ford survey of sorts, that let's you configure a new Fusion as you would like it. http://www1.forddirect.fordvehicles.com/FordVehicles.jsp?target=Config&sModel=2006fusion&sBrand=ford I think more companies should do this.

If it seems like I post a lot about the Fusion, that's because it's going to be a very important car for Ford. I have other cars coming and updates to other cars.

Is Ford afraid of Horsepower?

It's sad but true, or at least it's my opinion as a consumer. Ford is afraid of horsepower. They trail behind everyone in horsepower ratings in almost every segment.

Mustang GT 300 hp, Dodge Charger R/T 340 hp, Corvette 400 hp, GTO 400 hp

Ranger 210 hp, Toyota 240 hp, Nissan 265 hp, Chevy 220 hp

FiveHundred 203 hp, Accord 250 hp Altima 265 hp

Focus ST 150 hp, Chevy Cobalt SS 205 hp, Dodge Neon SRT 4 230 hp Honda Civic SI 170 hp

Ford since the mid 70's has been satisfied with supplying cars that are almost there and then letting the aftermarket finish the job. Especially with the Mustang this time around, Ford handed out preproduciton Mustangs to many tuners and aftermarktet companies. While this is great news for the consumer that wants to modify their Mustang, it can be difficult for someone who is on a budget (like yours truly.) Don't get me wrong 300 hp will be enough to get my hard earned cash. But what about the FiveHundred, Freestyle, Fusion and even the Focus?

If you look at Ford of Australia, they are not afraid to duke it out inthe horsepower wars. They compete head to head with anyone for horsepower in their Falcon range.

I suspect that Ford is in this situation because of the American penchant for litigation. With questionable drivers on the road and insurance rates alwasys going up, maybe Ford is doing the right thing?

Galaxy/Fairlane in Motortrend Future Forecast

one of my brothers has said this to me several times and I doubted him, but Motor Trend in it's Future Forecast section of their website says that Ford may be coming out with a replacement for the Crown Vic in 2006. Now every other online source I have checked has nothing on this, but click the link to see for yourself. If anyone can confirm this please let me know. If anyone knows this to be factually wrong, let me know and we can email motortrend.

Now I don't consider Motortrend to be an authority on anything, in fact since the editor took over, they've slipped from my favor. I still prefer AutoWeek and Car&Driver. But MotorTrend is still way better than Automobile and Road&Track. Those two I wouldn't wipe my rear with.

50 Years of Thunder

50 years of Thunderbird, well almost. The Bird was built from 1955 to 1997 and then brought back in 2002. Now with 2005 marking it's 50th Ford will be "putting the nameplate in the vault for future use" Criticised by many as too retro they did sell like hot cakes when introduced in 2002, but now are lingering on lots. Thunderbirds have always been some of my Favorite cars, just like Mustangs.

55 T-Bird, the one that started it all.

1958 T-Bird, the 58-60 Square birds were the first 4 seater birds.

61 T-Bird, the first of the Bullet Birds

64 T-bird

66 T-bird, it would be 36 years until you could have a factory drop top bird again.

1967 T-bird 2 door, the first year you had to make the distinction. Between 67 and 71 T-Birds were available with 4 doors and for the first time, not available as convertables.

1968 T-bird 4 door, when I bought my Lincoln Versailles years ago, the old fellow had one of these in the garage also. I figured I could get it cheap, but they knew what a classic it would be and wouldn't part with it.
